Thanks for the quick reply.  

When I right click on the variable the pop-up appears but there is no option
to 'Add to Monitors'.  I have Add Breakpoint, Add Watch Breakpoint and Add
Service Entry Point.  There are also Monitor Expression and Monitor Storage
options along with a couple of others that I know don't apply.

Hi Rick,
Variables view displays only Local Variables and these are not currently
supported for RPG. Hence, you are correct to use Monitors view.

The simplest way to add a variable to the Monitors view, is to double click
on
a variable in your source. This will select the appropriate variable.
Then use right mouse click to bring up the popup menu. Select 'Add to
Monitors'
from that popup.
The variable should end up showing in the Monitors view.
