For us this always boiled down to an argument of just because you CAN do something in a language/platform doesn't make it the best place to do it. Yes, RPG has string handling, API access and (awesome) database support, so you probably could do anything in it. However, the tooling and support for working with, for example, web services or browser interfaces is simply more mature in something like .Net (or PHP) than it is in RPG. Yes, you _can_ do a web page in CGIDEV2, but once you've use a toolset and language made for the web you'll wonder why you would ever try.

Yes, there is the argument that goes along the lines of "if I do it on the i then all I need is an i" but the reality is you're learning new stuff anyway, and you likely have Windows and Linux and networks and all that jazz in the enterprise anyway (do you really have 3477s on the desk w/twinax) so why not embrace it.
