One other difference, if I remember correctly. EXCAMTASK allows you to
specify the 'run environment' i.e. you run a default task in the 'PRD'
environment. With RUNAMTASK the task has to be defined in your 'run
environment' - If task SL 03 1234 is called it will use the 'blank'
environment library list so you must set up the task as SLPRD03 1234 if
you wish to use the PRD environment.

RUNAMTASK works just fine, although it doesn't have the help text that
graces EXCAMTASK, is undocumented and it is a trifle pernicketty. It
requires you to specify the PGM parameter, even though this would not
appear necessary - given that you've just specified the task code! If
you've got the brute to work, I'd carry on using it.
