It's really too bad you were excluding vendor replies...
There is a geac partner called Tangerine Software that has a Business
Intelligence tool that sounds really exciting...
Apparently it moves data from iseries to PC and back...

I'm sure they would give you a demo if you gave them a chance...

Their tool is called Nectari...  I think it is worth a serious look...

Thanks to all who made suggestions.
We are going to structure things a little differnetly as the replies
didn't fill me full of confidence.  For the Inventory inquiry, we are
going to move the data into SQL Server.  As for passing back data to the
400, we will get the Vb program to place records on a Data Queue.
Unless someone's going to tell me that's not a good idea either?...
