I'm assuming that you're getting ready to use the Forecasting Module (as
opposed to the "forecasting" in DRP). As I believe you suspect, distributors
sell unique items and are generally interested in the most accurate forecasts
at the item level. If, however, your product families (as determined by their
Inventory Item Group Minor codes) have a lot of substitutions that are
acceptable to customers (e.g., they'll gladly take Product B if Product A is
not available) - then families could be OK. Manufacturers will often forecast
at the family level because their main objective is to most accurately
predict the required parts and raw materials that may be common across the
entire family.
