Thanks all for your input. I have trailed using a percentage discount but find two problems. 1) Rounding does not always get it right. e.g. our tax rate is actually 10% so I set-up a discount of 9.09% $500 - 9.09% = $454.55 $454.55 + 10% = $500.01 I know its only 1 cent, but we are trying to fix problems not create them. 2) As previously stated most because the price varies from sale to sale a price list is not used, the prices are manually entered. In my testing the discount only worked if you we using a price list - not a manual price. Looks like I am going to have to mention the 'M' word to my manager.
