In response to John Manilla (Sierra Consultants): In the "all updates to JBA are passed through the standard System/21 programs so that all JBA validation and configuration rules are applied" part of your message, I assume your reference is to those JBA functions that have background update processes (such as warehouse process list confirmations and warehouse confirm ship). While I am a Viewpont user, I mentioned your company (trying to be fair). I think your message pretty much sums up the strengths of your system, but does imply that Viewpoint suffers from some of the shortcomings you address. Viewpoint does not require the "PC in the middle" and utilizes standard JBA programs for all updates. Viewpoint does not, however, offer any type of off-line operation. It would depend on the company whether they could truly take advantage of any off-line functionality. With the reliability of the AS/400, I would see this as an advantage mainly where someone is operating over a WAN with low reliability. On the other hand, Viewpoint is available on any scanning device that offers 5250 emulation. When we talked about your product several months ago, CLASS/400 offered off-line operation only on the Intermec Antares series. In summary, I think both Nutech Viewpoint and Sierra Class/400 are solid products. I really didn't mean to start a non-JBA vendor specific thread here. I've yet to have anyone answer my question about JBA warehousing packages. To see why I'm confused as to whether there is another JBA offering, follow this link http://jbaworld.com/services/customer/content/uksigs/distribution/index.htm and view the Powerpoint presentation for "JBA Automated Logistics". Maybe this will explain to everyone why I'm confused as to what JBA is offering. I guess I just need to give it and and assume if JBA had something worth buying in this area, my JBA salesperson would be trying to sell it to me, right? This product is produced and sold by Sierra Consultants located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. see: http://www.sierraltd.com or mailto:ContactUs@sierraltd.com The CLASS/400 is a direct TCP/IP client to the AS/400 without the use of PC's between the scanners and the AS/400. The product also uses no 5250 Emulation Sessions which allows the scanning to continue if the network or the AS/400 is offline. The scanned data is passed to data queues on the AS/400 and all updates to JBA are passed through the standard System/21 programs so that all JBA validation and configuration rules are applied before the data is updated in the System/21 database. The users receive direct feedback on the scanners if something is invalid, so that corrective action can be taken at the point of the scan. Viewpoint utilizes any scanner that offers TCP/IP 5250 emulation to the host AS/400. The users run Viewpoint RPG programs that provide initial validation and small screen oriented changes to standard JBA screens and also provide additional audit trails. The actual file updates occur using a Viewpoint engine service program that opens virtual terminal windows and "stuffs" keystrokes into the standard JBA programs. This means all JBA validations and any program mods are not bypassed. From what I can tell, this may be the way other products like Jacada and Electran interface with AS/400 packaged programs. Overall, Viewpoint provides good automated data collection on top of existing JBA warehousing and inventory control programs. I really wouldn't put it in the category of a sophisticated warehouse management system which is mostly paperless, directs workers and interleaves picking, putaway, location changes, counts, etc. Dan Thomas Sr. VP Information Systems Medical Distribution, Inc. 4500 Progress Blvd. Louisville, KY 40218-5058 Phone (502) 454-9013 ext. 120 email DThomas@lpw-mdi.com -----Original Message----- From: rstearns@mpire.net [mailto:rstearns@mpire.net] Sent: Thursday, February 17, 2000 11:27 AM To: JBAUSERS-L@midrange.com Subject: Re: JBA Warehouse Offerings What JBA vertical are you running... We installed the Drinks vertical and have started warehouse installation several times (to many road-blocks to list). The bar-code options were very limited and we ended doing a large amount of modifications to automate our custom process. Is the viewpoint product TCP/IP direct to the JBA module or is there a translator/batch process in between? Is anything else marketed in the US or Europe? I know Sierra Consultants also has a system that works with JBA. Anything else? I'm just looking for some feedback as to JBA's direction in this area. We use JBA's warehouse management module, use Viewpoint to a limited degree and are looking to do a full rollout of Viewpoint.
