I assume that turning off the RNF7031 would prevent RDi from doing this
annotation...

I don't see myself making much use of this enhancement.

But this is what I do, just glance down through the variables defined for
ones I can kill.

Hi Dan,

if you are using RDi - you can switch on the annotation of unused
variables in the source code.

(Screenshot - hoping it will be visible)

The definitions of unused variables (that are defined in the program) are
marked with an "i" on the left side and a blue mark in the scroll bar.

So you can find those quite fast. I usually remove them, before checking
the source in.

Of course - fields that are imported from an external file are not
annotated as they are not in the source code.

HTH and kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Barbara,

(I "moved" this to the RPG list because it's not specific to RDi, but
your post reminded me of a wish list item.)

One of the biggest issues I have with RNF7031 is that it is issued for
both 1) fields defined in external files and 2) program-defined variables.
I can't do anything with the former, but I can certainly act on the
latter. Such as deleting unused variables. When you have 5000 RNF7031
messages for fields in external files, it's nearly impossible to find the
handful issued for program-defined variables.

Is there a viable way to identify these? Perhaps issue a different
message for unused program-defined variables?

Subject: [WDSCI-L] RPG Environment variable to reduce the number of
RNF7031 messages in the event file

The ILE RPG compiler has PTFs for target releases V7R4M0 and V7R5M0 to
support a compile-time environment variable to prevent RNF7031 messages
from being placed in the event file.

ADDENVVAR QIBM_RPG_RNF7031_EVENTS VALUE('N')

You could add this ADDENVVAR command in the "Initial command:" section
in the Properties for your RDi connection.

If you compile in batch from RDi, you should also add "CPYENVVAR(*YES)"
in the "SBMJOB additional parameters" in the "Commands" tab of the
Properties for your connection.

The PTFs are:
7.4 TGTRLS(*CURRENT) - 5770WDS SJ02501
7.5 TGTRLS(*CURRENT) - 5770WDS SJ02922
7.5 TGTRLS(*PRV) - 5770WDS SJ02923
