I get you Patrik, but really this is a very siimple one to describe.

If you have an rpg pgm and a dspf, and a screen field in a rcdfmt of the
dspf...
and in your pgm you do...

exec sql
select tableColumn
into :screenField
from mylib/mytable

the compile listing shows...

position 28 variable xxxxx not defined or not usable.
reason: no declaration for the variable exists, the declaration is not
within the current scope, or not variable does not have an equivalent sql
data type.

this happens on 7.2 but not 7.4

I'm on a 7.2 system and doing the below in my rpgle and it will not
compile...

What is the actual error message?

What are the actual definitions in the program and DSPF?

i'm so used to doing this on other systems... is it a release limitation?

Transfer code of a working example and try?

the compile issue is the typical sql precompile issue saying the s2_fld
cannot be used due to data type or whatever... but both are simple char
fields

Please provide actual code snippets. Help us to help you.

I've observed myself that I had started to write many mails to the
Midrange Lists and never sent them: In the course of formulating the ask
for help and collecting details I often came across something I've not
tested and suddenly I saw the error. "Rubber Ducking". :-)
