It really depends on what you want to do with the resulting position. i.e. what processing you are doing.

Personally I wouls just use the %scan in a loop with the returned position being used to set the start position for the next scan.

I see no point in using SCAN. Even once you have an array, you are still going to have to loop through it processing the data it references. Using SCAN would confuse the heck out of any poor maintenance programmer who is unfortunate enough to have to deal with this down the road.
