My PDF workflow is as follows: OS/400 => Remote LPR *OUTQ with transform(*yes), type is SCS => Linux lpd => GhostPCL => PDF in User's home directory on Linux.
If you zoom in a lot into the generated PDF, you can even see that bold is in fact this kind of overprint you mention, with just a tiny amount of horizontal spacing. :-)
