From my own experience, and in accordance with Jim: No existing programs will be affected.

The only pitfall I know is: Commit(*none) by SQL is default when objects aren't journaled. If you enable journaling and do not explicitly state Commit(*none) after that step, any updates to the journaled objects will fail, because there is never an explicit commit issued and rollbacks are done implicitly at whatever thing ends.
