If I recall correctly - in that presentation, Scott was saying that using the CGI APIs was faster and more flexible than his preceding example which was based on IBM's IWS. IWS can be a good starting point if you need to quickly prove that your IBM i can play in the web service arena. However its limitations and underlying Java base can cause issues down the road. That was the reason for Scott's comment I believe.

You can use the raw CGI APIs, as Scott did, or use them as wrapped by a tool such as CGIDEV2. Alternatively, you can do as others have suggested and use a tool like ILEastic for implementing microservices.

There are also many third-party tools designed to work in conjunction with RPG.

Hi Mihael,

I was following Scott Klement's presentation on Web Services. It mentioned
CGI call Web services are simpler and more powerful. So thought of
exploring it.

Any reason you are explicitly asking about CGI?

I would take a look at ILEastic. One of the many pros for ILEastic is
the concept behind it. It is also pretty similar to the concept of
Node.js from an API point of view. So any developer with f. e. knowledge
in Express.js will hit the ground running using ILEastic.
