Another solution would be SQL - it also has a SPLIT table function - which you can multi-row fetch into the array - and the diagnostics will give you the number of rows fetched.

Thanks Jon, but the array is a subfield of a data structure, so cannot be
defined as dynamic.

Well, the simple answer is to use a dynamic array and then everything will
be automagic. If you actually need the count then %elem of a dynamic array
will give it to you after the %split but DATA-GEN should take care of it
anyway.

If you are not at a release that supports dynamic arrays (you probably are
if you can use %split) then it is possible that %elem(%split ... might work
but of course you have to run it twice.

Hi,

What would be the simplest way to get the number elements that get
populated in an array using the %split BIF? For example if msg_arr is an
array of dim 10 and varchar(200)
msg_arr = %split(string:'!');

I want to know the number of elements that got assigned in msg_arr so as
to
use the number in the count in DATA-GEN command.

I can use a for-each loop for %split and explicitly populate the array
and
count the elements found, but I was wondering if there was a simpler way.

TIA
