I agree - sometimes banks, etc., send out flat files with some transaction-type identifier at the start of the row - the content is organized differently in each row, and I think we do something like have different DS' to handle the differences. SQL might be able to be used, but I think, at first glance, that it's be pretty ugly.

Actually, program-described mode can be very useful if (a) one needs to
access files whose structure is unknown at compile-time, or might even
be variable, (b) one is able to obtain the structure at runtime, and (c)
for whatever reason, using SQL instead of RLA is not an option.

Not a very common combination of circumstances, to be sure.
