Just my 2cts.

This discussion is imho absolutely not necessary.

We have 3 scenarios: set the pointer a) *loval or *start, b) *hival, or c)
equal for reading.
Only an exact match can be equal (with a given key) and the advantage of the
%equal bif is,
that the file access by a read is not necessary, if the %equal fails.

Never would I use the %equal bif for lower or greater settings!

Btw. this discussion exists since 2004, almost 20 years ago.
