I can't see why not use EVALR - that's just what it is there for - and %trimr by default removes any blanks from the right-hand side - Ba-Da-Boom! you're done!

I would argue that %TRIMR (or even just %TRIM) is more important than
EVALR. You can do without the latter by checking lengths and explicitly
adding padding on the left.
