I agree on your opinion about RDi - best thing that happened to IBM i development. Don't get me wrong, VScode is OK, but I don't get warm with it. Not with Java, not with C# and also not with IBM i development.

But on the 5250 thing, I have a strong other opinion. 5250 is for IBM i what BASH is for Linux or PowerShell for Windows - and even better, because it provides a clean "transactional view" for the applications that run there - not only an uncontrolled data stream.

But let me say it like this - lets not start that "flame war" again, because it has been discussed over and over, and I don't see any progress in this topic. 99.9% of the IT world is now convinced, that anything other that a HTTPS / HTML data stream based UI is old, obsolete, bad and useless - so lets keep it this way.

Just my 2ct.

I agree. When I started coding on IBM i full time in 2000, a coworker introduced me to Code/400, and I haven't looked back since.

Today I code GUI applications and for the life of me, I cannot understand the clinging to SEU that developers do. RDi in and of itself provides a TON of functionality that SEU could never provide, and anyone starting out on IBM i in 2023 sure as daylight doesn't want to code in a 5250 terminal application, more or less write 5250 apps.

Yes RDi costs money, but tools do. That's just part of the way of doing things. I pay for tools I use in Python development so yes sometimes you are gonna pay.

IBM i is an amazing platform. But, let's ditch 5250 anything. Please!

Sorry, James - I just don't agree - or perhaps understand.

SEU was old long and clunky long before free-form RPG came along and that removed the only thing it was ever any good at - namely syntax checking the code. Now you can't even do that if you use any feature introduced in the past 10 years or so.

But why oh why use SEU? Sigh ...
Because you're accessing the box from a terminal session?

Because you're an old terminal-jock?

Because you LIKE SEU?
