if it's getting complicated then just for first 2 files:-

file1 :- fld1 decimal 6(length)

file2 :- fld2 character 9 (length) ( it's consecutively 6 numeric
digits needs to be extracted for comparison and they have random start
positions
in this field )

so what should be the correct version of this SQL query- select * from
file1 A left join file2 B ON A.FLD1 = CAST(B.FLD2 AS INT)

so that i could get all the 6 numeric digits which are although in
consecutive in nature but their start positions may vary in this field2
(fld2) which is of character data type and of 9 length.

Thanks.

It's not my intention to be ugly, but you should really think more
carefully about your questions and give more background information.

From the types of questions I have seen from you, it seems that you are a
newbie to the platform. Being new to IBM i is a /good/ thing, but please
consider that most of us have daytime jobs and don't have that much time
for guesswork at helping you solve your problems, and I'd rather spend my
evenings with the family, not answering technical questions.

For example, in this case, I would have at least given the names and
attributes of the files/fields that you are attempting to join so as to
eliminate confusion on the part of those of us who are attempting to help
you.

Perhaps cut and paste portions of the DDS/DDL used to create the files,
showing the relevant fields, thus eliminating the guesswork.

Also, Eric Raymond wrote an excellent blog on 'How to Ask Question the
Smart Way."

Everyone should read/re-read/review this page:
