Max of current Column... default value.... sounds like what SEQUENCEs and columns DEFAULT exists for.
Or are you restricted on not using such feature?

clear *all filenamer; 

I think I had to do it this way to get the key fields cleared after a chain.

Personally, I'd used an SQL statement to get the max number

Exec Sql
Select max(custnbr) into :custNo from custmstr where...

Then you don't have to worry about it
