I'm working on organizing the programs called from a menu (or a program

I remember guru-tech suggestions to run a program A as *NEW if it is
called directly from a menu, and when that program calls program B or C,
to create B or C as *CALLER.
There's nothing particularly wrong with this architecture.
That said, I prefer to initiate ILE/RPG4 beginners with a /copy or
data area to bring in standard H-Specs for DFTACTGRP(*NO)
ACTGRP('mycompany') that is used in every *PGM in the organisation.
*SRVPGMs would use the same named AG.
Although ILE activation groups allow for sophisticated architectures,
few existing applications benefit from multiple AGs.
I would have different advice if you were asking about a complete rewrite :-)
