Okay, so you can chmod etc inline with sftp but you can do that with scp +
ssh
*scp myfile myid@myhost:/x/y/foofile*
*ssh myid@myhost 'chmod ugo+r /x/y/foofile'*

the covers.) scp is much easier to use IF you don't need functionality
like renaming, deleting, et al. sftp is more complex, but has that

I don't see that SFTP really has any (terribly awesome) extra
functionality ..
