All the BIF's are contenders but %scanrpl() is very high on my list.

I wrote a form letter dunning system for our AR folks a few years ago. Without %scanrpl().... UGH!

I remember how we used to do that stuff... not fond remembrances.

%ScanRpl is voted MVB for Most Valuable BIF ever by moi 😉

Thanks to Barbara Morris for its implementation

Indeed, this is why many (most?) other programming languages have a formalized string interpolation system, if not a full-blown templating system. Some examples can be found here:

https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FString_interpolation&data=04%7C01%7C%7C33fe6399b06f453cc52608d8d449d443%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637492760844333478%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=yuhTgR3miNtXdemPfXzCPwtZU0K8OaTJ%2BkBS19jJqXQ%3D&reserved=0

Your method of using %SCANRPL is essentially a home-grown interpolation system. It was indeed a significant improvement to RPG's string handling when it was introduced.
