Allow me to correct: You're talking about full-duplex vs. half duplex settings for Ethernet devices. This most often happened because admins were not trusting auto-negotiation and configured it wrong. Or reused switchports configured statically for a new device.
Rule of thumb for all devices built in the last decade: Leave it to autoconfigure to figure out the correct settings. It gets it right almost always.
