We do not use the XML SQL clauses, as the XML docs we have to mak are more complex, with multiple layers (level of indention/segments).
I have to fill one segment with data from 8 different PFs; very difficult to do with SQL.
At the moment it is a simple program that creates an XML template (stucture stored in a PF) and for each segment calls a subprocedure;each segment has its own SQL statement., that retrieves the required daa values.

That manual is the one I hadn't downloaded and/or searched.

Second, I do not see CCSID being used for SQLTYPE(CLOB_FILE) anywhere in the SQL embedded manual, so I'm not sure what CCSID after SQLTYPE will do, but clearly it isn't what you wanted.  See the link I gave to have a bit more control over the flow of data.
