I looked at that field and was not sure how that would work. I guess I was
confused by the "next subfile record". I assumed it to be the next record
format.

If I understand you right, you want to read about the SFLCSRPRG Keyword.
"Use this field-level keyword to define when the cursor leaves the field, it
goes to the same field in the next subfile record instead of the next field
in the same record."
