Hello Steve,

Today's generation (trying to figure what age to say here without offending
someone) are about volume, not style (here comes the laziness part).

While I agree with you in general, please keep in mind, that…

… humans are prone to have fond memories of the good old time. All the struggle, all the cursing, arguing, and stress is gone from memory. Everyone of us is biased towards the good old times because of that. If you try to recall memories more detailed, you'll re-encounter. But it still doesn't feel as hurtful as back then.

… todays economy can't be 1:1 compared with the one in maybe the 1970's. In earlier times, computers were f*cking expensive to acquire and run, and compared to today, they did not run but crawl. And personnel was comparably cheap. Today, the most expensive part of computing is personnel. This change has a lot of implications. Coding for a living is merely short-term problem solving. Careful planning and thinking, artistic value and beauty (readable code!) are not perceived to pay off. Problems have to be solved as quickly as possible to get the solution for cheap. This habit explains a *lot* of the really product quality (also in terms of security) from some major vendors outside the Midrange or Mainframe world.
