Sorry - of course - *server job* - you are absolutely right !

It happens to me all the time when i let QZDASOINIT job do the magick -
the server job used in SQL

And I was wondering why IBM is not able to do the trick under the covers to
return the spool name etc. so it is transparent for us as programmers so we
don't have to this about if the spool we created by a server job or just
directly - Maybe a candidate for a little RFE.

Have a nice weekend.

Niels,

I don't think its because of using SQL... but I think wrong LOTS of times.

The link you suggest actually is the most logical cause, (not SQL) but a
Host Server Job.

And their solution is one way (or actually several suggestions as to how)
to get around the situation.

However, at this time I'm avoiding using APIs due to a long standing
dislike of programming using them. It's silly, but I use the excuse that
many of us long-time (aka - old) programmers use... "I did it once a long
time ago and didn't like it". I may get over that before I retire, or not.

I much prefer when someone does it for me and makes it easier.
Actually... that's not true. I do the difficult a lot... if I think it's
fun. Like this program. I did it to see if I could do what I thought was
a better job than what was available (without further cost). And it was
fun to do.

It is because you are using SQL so the print is made from a server job.

Use the API in this link to retrieve the spool info

I've made an assumption here based on observations, and I may be
incorrect (and most likely am), but I have no other explanation.
Hopefully, in as kind of a manner as is usually displayed in this
group, I can be corrected and put on the right path.

I've created an SQL based RPGLE program that I use to convert RPG IV
to RPG Free. In it, I utilize the SYSTEM() function to compile the
original source, copy the spooled file to a source file member, and
search for various information like c-spec created variables. The
problem is that when running the program using the RDI "user action",
the compile spool file job number is not the same as the job number of
the job that issued the "user action".

I don't know why, but it uses a job associated with my user id, but
not one of the current active jobs. Not sure what job that is and why
it uses it. Nor do I know how to discover what the spool file job
number is.

I believe that this is also an issue with other development
environments other that RDI, so I don't think it's an "RDI" problem,
but one associated with SYSTEM() and similar. I haven't tried QCMDEXE
to see if that is different. Maybe I should?

Any known answers?
