Have you tried playing with Return %EditC or %EditW instead of %Char ?

OK, this is getting weird - I compiled mine with your declarations - I got the same result I did with the 9 and 3 lengths!

Any chance it works differently using just the RETURN vs assigning to a variable?

I tested this a bit - let me know if my declarations are the same -

**free
dcl-s packed_data packed(9 : 0) inz(-123456789); dcl-s d_shift
zoned(3 : 0) inz(100); dcl-s result char(256); result =
%char(packed_data / d_shift); *inlr = *on;

The result was '-1234789.890000000000000000000'

This is on a 7.3 box.

What's different for you compared to me?

As I am creating a generic procedure to work with all kinds
of data, I was using the following equivalent definitions.

dcl-s packed_data packed(46 : 0) inz(-123456789); dcl-s d_shift
zoned(15 : 0) inz(100);

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
