I (sadly) promoted a CL like that a couple of weeks ago. GOTO for a RCVF loop, no subroutines, just disgusting.

I don't have a problem with running 30 year old code that still works..

I have a problem with
- running 30 year code that's been band-aided to unrecognizable over the
last 29 years
- writing a new program today as if it was 30 years ago.

Why are there still hard copy books when digital is clearly superior?

People can beat this subject like a dead horse. I happen to be at a
client site where it’s still predominantly an RPG/400 shop. I know quite a
few other law that are in the same position.

Whether you like it or not, companies are in this situation and if
changing for the sake of change, then they won’t - obviously.

A big plus is that the IBMi does let you continue with legacy code. We
have 30 year old code still running flawlessly. I suspect if IBM got rid
of that capability, the exodus away from IBM would be fierce and would
erode the platform even further.

My 2-cent opinion at today’s market rate.

It's way to easy to find RPG developer's with "20 years of experience"...

Who actually have 1 year of experience 20 times!

Just because you're coding RPGLE source members and using some RPG IV

the worst thing is you still can code in this old style!

The greatest thing about IBM i is that you can still run programs that
you
compiled 30+ years ago.

The worst thing about IBM i is that you can still run programs that you
compiled 30+ years ago.

Sadly this level of compatibility is a two-edged sword!

Actually - now that I think about it may be a good idea that it works
as it does now. Old copy books and all that.

However I sometimes think that backwards compatibility (as is the
reason for why this has been designed this way) is not always a good
thing.

On other platforms developers are forced to bring the code up to new
standards "or else". Much easier to motivate management to cough up
the funds to keep the applications modern.

I have seen some RPG-II style code recently that literally made me
shudder...
