Booth,

Assuming that you don't want (or can't) change the CL program then one
approach I've seen in the past is:

1. Have the RPG program send a program message that you define (call this
your marker message)
2. Call the CL program
3. When the CL program returns the RPG program receives program messages
until it finds it's marker message. You have now become aware of all
messages related to the called program (and that had not been previously
removed).

Google QMHRCVPM and you should find a few hits related to what you might
want to do. There are several possible approaches.

An RPG program has:

d SendDoc pr extpgm('SEND5C')

SEND5C is a CL program with a MONMSG MSGID(CPF0000)

How do I capture that message in my RPG program?

On your MONMSG CPF0000, have it execute some code (jump to a tag or
execute a
subroutine) that sets a return variable with the message id & message data
(which you can retrieve with RCVMSG) and return that information to the
calling
program in a variable.
