If there is a JSON option, use that instead of SOAP, though.

SOAP... *shudder*

For SOAP specifically....

Don't try to "read the docs"...

At the very least, point SoapUI to the WSDL and look at the request
template it generates..

Better options would be
- Thomas Raddatz's WSDL2RPG
http://www.tools400.de/English/Freeware/WSDL2RPG/wsdl2rpg.html
- IBM Integrated Web Services (IWS) client wsdl2ws.sh
https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg3T1026868

Both of which will auto-generate the code you need to work with a SOAP web
service.

Thomas' program work in conjection with Scott's HTTP API. While the IBM
offering uses the (PASE?) Axis HTTP library.

Greg and John, I am currently fighting the same battle with a SOAP Web

Both of you have hit the nail on the head.

translating their online documentation into what I actually need to do
(with the tools that I have).

It has been hard and they assume we are using a tool they have and send
instructions for it.
I am getting where I have a good understand HTTPAPI but giving them what
they want in the exact format, a lot of trial and error.

I think that is the case for a lot of us. It is one of the reasons I
think it is worth exploring the open source PASE options. Node.js in
particular but also Python are closer to "speaking the same language"
as what you're likely to encounter in the documentation

John (or anyone), can you recommend a starting point to self-train myself
using one of these open source options. And what one to use. I know my
company will not pay for any product at this time so the free open source
is the way to go.
