I don't know if this helps. I use the following code to return a portion of a page from a URL. Its more effective than a ping, in case you need to confirm that the server is doing more than just returning ping.

This run from STRSQL.

values(
cast(systools.httpgetclob(
'http://www.google.com','') as char(100))
)


Or as embedded SQL in RPG:
exec sql set :SiteDta=
cast(systools.httpgetclob(:URL,'') as char(100));
