It really doesn't matter because _everything_ is "binary". Even if the result contained (say) spaces or "ABCD" there would be no error.

So as David says use the code to determine if you need the value and only use it if the code indicates that text is present.

You'll have to look at the message id and determine how to parse the message data.

If what you're really interested in is the message text, use the QMHRTVM api (https://ibm.co/2Pufqv4) to retrieve the message info. Pass the message data raw (6th parameter) and the api will give you the message text.
