Programs cannot have return values - except the way that they have always done i.e. by the called routine changing the value of a parameter.

Only procedures can have return values and the definition is placed on the PI/PR line itself. That can be a simple variable char(20), or varchar(20), or Int(5) just to give a few examples. If you want to return more than one value then you you use LikeDS against against (preferably) a DS defined with the Template keyword.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that using a PI/PR makes any difference to the actual calling mechanism - it offers additional ways to have the compiler help you but ultimately the PR/PI used to define a program call (for example) is no different to the old CALL/PARM.

This seems straight forward but is it? The RPG world has gone places I never imagined.

I want to use PR/PI for the parameter(s) needed as input for a program, right?

But what about the return parameter(s)?
