Thanks I got the program to run correctly with Brigitta's advice. Yah, I am planning on hiding the source, and security was the purpose of this program.

Subject: Re: Sql Return Encrypted Data Without Writing to Table

To encrypt you need the data and a key. You can write a routine that encrypts whit a fixed key. (hide the source)

Birgitta's advice is very good sql set.. use the encryption functions from SQL

Another way to do it is to use the MI instruction _CIPHER

If you only need to make it hard to read, you can use %xlate

I am using the decrypt_char(var) and encrypt(var) functions in sql statements. However, is there a way to just return an encrypted variable without having a table?

I'm trying to write a program that will be passed an un-encrypted variable and return the encrypted characters.
