I think you're wrong about that. I think many people are happy to have
the window size remain fixed even when switching between 80 and 132
columns.

For now, what you want (font size is variable when dragging to change
window size, yet fixed when switching modes) is not possible. You are
not alone in wanting this combination of behaviors, but ACS does not
make it available. If you want the font size to be fixed, it has to be
universally fixed.
