The number one thing to remember about varying fields is to trim the date as it is loaded.

Old style string build:

fixedString = %Trimr(fixedString) + newContent;

New Style with varying:

varyString += %TrimR( newContent);

When you do it this way the length of the string is automatically adjusted. It is rarely necessary to manually set the length of a varying field via %Len.

If you are going to set the length manually you might as well use a fixed length field.

Thanks Alan but I am referring to the *data portion of the field.

Before I added the line;

%len(rJsonString) = 100000 ;

When I tried to put data into the filed I received an error that the
string exceeded the field size because the length was set to 1

The field in the database is as you have said 30000 + 2

The variable in the program is 100000 + 4

So before I modify the data portion of the field (rJsonString) I manually
set the length to it's maximum of 100000.

After I have built the string I set the length based on what is now in the
field.

I hope this clarifies ?
