It's about the same:
Select count(*) into :myvar
From... (The remainder of your SQL statement)

In my effort to streamline my question, I left out the JOIN and the WHERE
clause. So, for completeness (now), the select is:
Exec SQL select * from File1, File2 where key1 = key2 and SUID1 like
'%N1%';

I don't see how I can work those in with the suggestions given.
