Jim,

I've spent a fair bit of time processing xml documents in and out of RPG
programs.

More recently I've been working on a project where they wanted to use JSON
for data exchange.

If you have time and/or interest, I would say a good place to start might
be Scott Klement's presentation pdf which you can find here:

https://www.scottklement.com/presentations/Working%20with%20JSON%20in%20RPG.pdf

It's 39 pages long and includes details about using the YAJL Open Source
JSON Tool, but in the introduction Scott gives a good concise of JSON vs
XML and his impressions / opinions.

In the end I chose to use the new DB2 JSON functions rather than YAJL but
that was just my preference.

Apologies if you have no interest or it's not appropriate to your work.

Best regards,
Craig

With SQL you do nothing else than you'll do with RPG, except instead of
writing sub-procedures you'll write Common Table Expressions.

In my classes I teach both methods, i.e. pure RPG, RPG in composition with
CGIDEV2, XML-INTO with and without Handlers and XML-SAX, as well as the SQL
publishing functions and XMLTABLE.
In both cases we are building and shredding (some more) complex
XML-Statements.
80% of my attendees prefer the SQL solution.

BTW same thing for JSON (YAJL compared with SQL).

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best regards

Look for examples on the web from Birgitta Hauser. There are also out some
there from Scott Forstie and other IBMers.

Personally I still find it all too much trouble - but then SQL syntax and I
don't like each other much <grin>

I am trying to create an XML document using SQL and am having a very
difficult time just using the SQL XML Programming Manual and the SQL

I am trying to create a document that looks like this, writing out to an
IFS file.

<Request>
<Product>
<Profile>
<Data>
<field1>1</field1>
<field2>2</field2>
</Data>
<NewGroup>
<field3>1</field3>
<field4>2</field4>
</NewGroup>
</Profile>
</Product>
</Request>

I am really looking for more than a 1 liner on what the various functions
do like XMLCONCAT (and a couple examples), or how do you create
parent/child
groupings like product/profile....
Trial and error is driving me crazy (er)......

TIA
