With SQL you do nothing else than you'll do with RPG, except instead of
writing sub-procedures you'll write Common Table Expressions.

In my classes I teach both methods, i.e. pure RPG, RPG in composition with
CGIDEV2, XML-INTO with and without Handlers and XML-SAX, as well as the SQL
publishing functions and XMLTABLE.
In both cases we are building and shredding (some more) complex
XML-Statements.
80% of my attendees prefer the SQL solution.

BTW same thing for JSON (YAJL compared with SQL).
