They return -1 to indicate an error.

open returns a descriptor, otherwise.
read/write return a length, otherwise
close returns 0 for success, -1 for error.

Of course, you could also look in the IBM Knowledge Center. They are documented under Programming / APIs / APIs by Category / Unix-type APIs / IFS APIs.
