Your problem is that you want V5R4 and that limits you to "old fashion"
methods but then again you may not be able to
expect that an RPG programmer is able to code REST webservices in e.g.
node.js that is the obvious choise when it
comes to handle JSON from/to the client (browser)

Your subfile program that exists now is easily converted into a CGI

to spit that data out to a web page. I have tons of examples at:

Also, www.fieldexit.com has a ton of examples too. They do all sorts of
things from reading from a DB, to using web services to get information.

CGIDEV2 I'm sure has a lot of examples as well.
