already tried that...

d g_hostData s a len(100000) varying(4)
d dim(c_varNum) inz

this definition does not allow any values to even be written to it.

dynamically allocating also crossed my mind, but want to get the thing
working first as-is before I go there.

PM:
so i'm assigning namesValuesDS.value = %addr(g_hostData(i)) but it is
still
getting the
A character representation of a numeric value is in error.

And before it returns to the rpg caller, i even have a debugging loop
where
i examine each namesValuesDS.value and they are indeed assigned
correctly
from g_hostData...

so where can this error be coming from?

If you turn on DEBUGIO for the caller then you should be able to
find out exactly which field RPG is having a problem with.

also, another small side concern, what if i ever have column definitions
greater than the 255 chars we defined g_hostData with?

You can increase the length of the host data elements as needed.
You can even make the host data array pointer-based and dynamically
allocate its storage at execution time to avoid any possible issue with
trying to allocate too much storage in the program, itself.

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
