i really don't think i'm assigning value (or sqlda.data) correctly...
here's the confusion...

This is the OAR DS that contains value (which is returned to the calling
rpg pgm)...

namesValueDS.field(i).value - which is a pointer...

i need to assign our g_hostData(i) data value to that pointer.

These pointers are killing me. How do i get the
namesValueDS.field(i).value set to value in g_hostData(i)?

The answer depends upon whether you need the value of
g_hostData(i):

namesValueDS.field(i).value = g_hostData(i);

or you need the address of g_hostData(i).

namesValueDS.field(i).value = %addr(g_hostData(i));

and look at figure 23 of below link...
http://m.iprodeveloper.com/rpg-programming/create-dynamic-sql-
handlers-using-rpg-open-access

what is (r * row lengh)? in the %str assignment?

I guess you mean figure 24. You only need that calculation of you
are fetching multiple rows in a single call and then returning only one
row at a time to the caller..
