... my Java Open Source ArdGate (the universal database Gateway for AS/400) relies on log4j. For problem analysis, when problems are reported, the user has to put the logging to Debug mode and send me a minimalized programm and the Java log files. Mostly it takes me only a few minutes to see the problem and the problem of the user could be solved. And this is working even in a rather complex environment, where people not knowing too much of writing RPG programms, accessing diffrent databases via embedded SQL and most problems arising with the diffrent SQL dialects of the diffrent databases.
After the first stable release of ArdGate, most enhancements where made to the logging (adding log statements) to make problem analysis more effective. I'm even using the debug features of Eclipse only in very rare cases, preferring to add some log statements only running in debug mode. In production there is only very few logging, to see the real error situations very fast, but it could be leveraged just making a minor change to a config file.
