You need a beginning slash:
docNode = yajl_stmf_load_tree('/home/bmartin/Louie.json': errMsg );
If you don't use a beginning slash, the system will add your home
directory to the beginning (which is probably /home/bmartin).
So it's looking in /home/bmartin/home/bmartin/Louie.json in your example.
