I know I can rename it all to my hearts content but that would kind of defeat the purpose of a standard library.

If this hypothetical set of renames were implemented as a /COPY that
looked like dcl-pr sh_fcn extproc('long_function'); and that /COPY
were to be contributed to the project, wouldn't there be a canonical
set of longer names?

We as a community are at that point in our history where we're past
being hesitant about downloading code, but we don't have time-tested
means to contribute. Sourceforge, Bit Bucket, Github are pretty rare
here, Slack, Ryver, etc aren't well travelled by us - yet. We're on
the cusp of powered flight, at the point where we feel comfortable
commenting on it, thinking of the wonderful possibilities, but not yet
comfortable stepping into the machine ourselves. We still need to see
a few test flights first.
