Here I'd be drawn and quartered for suggesting externalizing IO, and boiled in oil for suggesting pure SQL IO.

FWIW, SQL does that without externalizing your I/O.
Replacing native I/O with SQL >>> a whole 'nother debate. Gee, look at the time! ;-)
