It doesn't help you directly, but we created a webservice in our external
website that took an ID number which then used that number to lookup in a
file the correct URL. The file could handle URLs of the standard size and
so we managed to workaround the 123 character limit. Alternatively, you
could use one of the URL shortener services on the web, such as bit.ly or
goo.gl - I believe it is possible to use a webservice to automatically
create a short URL from a long one..

I hope that (at least) gives you an idea or two to work with.
